While working in the timber near the Wapsipinicon River east of Nashua, he was struck by a falling tree and killed instantly.
Thus, at the age of only 29 years, George Walter Lockey has been called from the scenes of earthly toil to sit in heavenly places.
He was working with Floyd Eckenrod and the latter's son in law, Milo Merritt when the accident occurred.
A tree they had cut had lodged against another tree and they cur the truck in two so it would fall to the ground. When the tree started to fall, Mr. Eckenrod and Mr. Merritt ran in one direction and Mr. Lockey in the other. He failed to get away soon enough and the falling tree struck him on the head, crushing his skull and causing instant death.
Mr. Lockey was born at Spencer, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Miss Doris Kellner of Nashua, April 18, 1932. To this union four children were born, Wanda, now 6-year-old, Evelyn, 4, Sophia Ann 2 and Wayne 3 months.
He is survived by his widow and the four children. His mother preceded him in death August 17, 1930. His father J.B. Lockey, his brothers, Jesse, Orlo, Burdette and Clyde and his sisters, Mrs. Mary Barth, Mrs. Edna Rausch and Fern all of Spencer. Also survive him.
Mr. Lockey has lived in this community for a number of years and was highly respected by all who knew him. Those who were nearest and dearest to him testify that he was a kind and loving husband and father. Funeral services were held at the Little Brown Church Monday afternoon, February 20, Rev. Wm. Kent officiated.
Interment was in Greenwood Cemtery
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Lockey, Mr. and Mrs. Max Barth, Mr. and Mrs. George Rausch, Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Lockey, Clyde Lockey, Burdette Lockey and Gerne Lockey, All of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Echelberger and two sons, Billy and Bobbie, Mrs. Florence Wing and daughter, Joyce Ann of Kamtar, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goodale of Iowa Falls, Winston Lockey, Burbank, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Michael, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lockey, Arvanna and Lowell of Basett, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mathney, Mr. and Mrs. John Chadler and Iola Peters of Clinton, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. A.L. An Appreciation
Words fail to express our deep appreciation for the many kind deeds, words of sympathy and beautiful floral offerings, which have helped to comfort us during our deep bereavement at the sudden death of our beloved husband, father and son in law.
