William Willis Thornton was born in Brentsvillle, Virginia He was a farmer and married to Mary Susan Buckner in 1851. They had seven children. He was in Company A, 4th Virginia Cavalry until April 1862. He was Assistant Commissary of Subsistence to Early and Ramseur. He was CS to Pegram and Walker. General Jubal Early called him, "the most faithful, efficient and useful officer in his department that I know." He died in Brentsville.
