In 1850 he removed to KY where he taught school. In 1852 he began his migration to California which took six months, arriving in Placerville, El Dorado, CA in September of that same year. Soon after he moved to Contra Costa County then to Oregon where he stayed until May of 1853 when he returned to El Dorado County. His next intention was to return east but upon arriving back in Contra Costa County he was employed to teach school near Lafayette which he did in 1853 and 1854. In 1855 he opened a store and ran a hotel. IN 1857 he petitioned Congress to establish a post office at his place which was named Centerville. Given that there was already a Centerville established in the state he change the name to Lafayette after the French General; in 1857 he received his appointment as postmaster and mail agent. He was one of the oldest postmasters in the state, serving well over two decades.

Benjamin married Miss Adeline Gorham, a native of Illinois on 17 Aug 1854 in Lafayette, Contra Costa, California.
