Enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 22 March 1875.

Was in Company M, (Capt. Thomas French) in Marcus Reno's command at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He crossed the river when Reno attacked the indian village and was able to make the retreat back and up to the hilltop where he fought until Terry arrived.
