Enlisted Aug 12,1862 in Urbana, Ohio at the age of 18 and served in Co H 45th Ohio Inf during the Civil War. Most of the men from Co H were from Champaign, Co.
Wounded, shot in the right leg and was one of the 134 Union soldiers from the 45th Ohio captured in the battle at Philadelphia TN on Oct 20 1863. Believed to be sent first to Belle Isle Prison in Richmond Va where 63 died from a harsh winter. Then was among some of the first sent to Andersonville Prison Ga probably arriving on Feb 27, 1864 where he survived the worst prison conditions imaginable as thirty percent of the prisoners there died from disease and malnutrition.
Exchanged in Savannah Ga on Nov 14 1864 probably because of ill health related to his leg wound and severe neglect.
Discharged April 12, 1865 in Columbus, Ohio.
