Married Sylvester Courtney, son of Sylverster Courtney and Flora Aumock on January 30, 1917 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Married Cleve A. Huffman.

From the Akron Beacon Journal, Wednesday, August 14, 1940:
Beats Out Fire, Races 6 Blocks Carrying Boy
Saved by the quick action of his mother, who grabbed him in her arms and ran six blocks with him to Children's hospital, Clarence Courtney, 5, of 193 W. State st., is recovering from second degree burns at Children's hospital today.
Physicians at the hospital say that only the fact that the mother, Mrs. Bernice Courtney, a widow, acted quickly, saved the child.
Clarence was playing with his sister, Joy, 7, in the kitchen of their home, when a box of safety matches attracted his attention. He found one match broken into three pieces and started to scratch the broken tip. The match flared and the single flimsy petticoat which the child wore, a garment belonging to his sister, burst into flames. The sister, horrified, added her screams to the little boy's.
"I dashed downstairs and saw Clarence in flames" the mother related today. "I have always warned the youngsters never to play with matches. I beat out the flames on his chest with my hands and Joy got her hands burned too, trying to help me."
At the hospital, willing hands lifted the child from the arms of the mother who was almost exhausted from running so far with her heavy burden.
Mrs. Courtney's hands were treated for burns and little Joy was later brought to the hospital where her burned fingers were also treated.
