Helen Elizabeth (PRIDE) Fulcher Meyer was born October 19, 1937 in Washington, Daviess County, IN to Wilbur and Sadie (Woodall) Pride. She lived for short periods with her family in Ohio and California, but when she was very young, her parents brought her and her brother back to Indiana, and raised her in Algiers, Pike County, Indiana where many of her extended family members resided.

Helen attended elementary school in Algiers, then, in 1955, she graduated from Otwell High School. She married Jesse John Fulcher, and the couple raised five daughters in Pike County before his death in 1986.

During those early years, when her girls were very small, Helen taught piano. Helen was an accomplished piano artist, and was very talented as a singer as well. She often played in churches, accompanying her young daughters with both instrument and voice.
Helen loved music. She used her talents to perform in plays in southern Indiana and was an active participant and soloist in the choir at Main Street Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, Indiana where she was a member for many years. In later years, she played the piano and sang in the choir at St. Clement Catholic Church in Boonville. She was also a frequent volunteer in local nursing homes, playing her music to enrich the lives of the residents. She continued to minister to others through her music after she moved to the Woodmont Health Campus where she resided at the time of her death.

Helen taught all her girls to read at an early age, and after her youngest child started kindergarten, Helen taught Head Start for a short time. She was told she had a gift for teaching, so in the fall of 1967, she began attending classes at Oakland City College, majoring in Elementary Education. After having graduated magna cum laude and having completed her student teaching at Petersburg Elementary, she began her teaching career in the fall of 1970 at Otwell Elementary School.
Helen continued her education, earning a Masters' Degree at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, and by 1977, she was principal of Otwell Elementary.
Helen changed many students' lives in Pike County through her contributions to the county's school system and the programs she implemented. She conducted a Kindergarten Round-Up in Otwell, Petersburg, and Winslow Elementary Schools, worked closely with the Special Education and Learning Disabilities programs, developed the 5th grade Outdoor Education program at Otwell, planned, coordinated, and conducted the Pike County Spelling Bee, was the Curriculum Coordinator for grades, K-2, and was a member of the Pike County Leadership and Education Development Committee. She was appointed by the State Superintendent of Education to a committee on textbook adoption for the state of Indiana, and was chairperson of staff evaluation for Pike County schools.
Helen was given the prestigious State of Indiana Principal of the Year award in the 1980s.

While she resided in Pike County, Helen was a member of the Optimists' Club and earned the Optimist of the Month award for her involvement in the club's works to better the community. She helped them develop the "Just Say No" programs for all three elementary schools.
Helen also worked with Hospice in Pike County, where she served as a board member, and helped to set their policies.
As an active member of the Main Street Presbyterian Church, she served as an Elder and on several committees, as well as her commitment to the choir.

She once again continued her own education, soon graduated from the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy, then worked to help other principals in the state of Indiana to become better administrators. It was in that position that Helen met her second husband, Leroy Meyer. They wed in November 1989 and moved to Boonville, IN.

Helen didn't slow down after her retirement. She enjoyed playing golf in Boonville, kept beautiful flower gardens, painted folk art, did her best to keep up with her ever-growing family's activities, participated in Bible study groups (affectionately called the "Hen's Club" by her husband), and appreciated their annual trip to Spring training in Florida, where she loved being in the sunshine and taking long walks.

Helen was blessed with a large number of descendants who will miss her ready smile and her beautiful music. Her 5 daughters all survive.
Helen leaves 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and her husband of 31 years.

Helen's parents, her first husband, her brother (Norman Pride), and a great-grandson (Brody Beard) all preceded her in death.

A private ceremony will take place when Helen is laid to rest on Friday, November 27, and a memorial honoring her life will be announced at a later date.

If you wish to contribute to a charity in memory of Helen, donations may be made to Main Street Presbyterian Church of Petersburg, Indiana, or to St. Clement Catholic Church of Boonville, Indiana.
