It is believed that Anna went by the name of Kate Lucille Brown throughout most of her teaching career. For over 40 years, she taught school in several northern and western states - sometimes holding the position of principal. Although I have not seen her teaching certificates, I have been told that all of those that still exist were issued in the name of Kate Lucille Brown with the earliest being dated 1889.
Kate/Anna's year of birth is given on this page as an estimate based on earliest census records. The 1870 census names her as Anna W - age 8 (b 1861-62). The 1880 census names her as A.W. - age 17 (b 1862-63). Those two census records name no child as Kate Lucile or any variation. She is not found in 1900. In 1910 she is named as Kate L Brown - age 45 (b. 1864-65). In 1920 she is named as Lucile Brown - age 42 (b. 1877-78). In 1930 she is named as Lucile Brown - age 67 (b. 1862-63) and in that census she is listed in the household of her sister, May, her niece, Amelia, and her, nephew, Earthman, and is listed as being the aunt of Amelia. Her death certificate - naming her as Kate Lucile Brown - gives a date of birth of Dec 26, 1876. It gives her father's name incorrectly as Thomas Brown - not Thomas Saltsman as it should've been. Her mother's name is given as Narcissa Nance which is correct. It states she was single. The informant was Mr. Ronald Needham - husband of her niece, Amelia.
(Contributor's note: Anna/Kate was my gg aunt.)
