John Kelley was the son of David & Nancy Gilliland Kelley. He married Elizabeth Ford in 1831 in Ohio and they were the parents of Francis and David E 1835-1878 IL #69489603. In 1837 he visited Iowa, but did not remain here long. After Elizabeth died, he married Jane Ford in 1838. John and Jane were the parents of James, Nancy, William, Mary, Charles, Lucy, John, and Florence.

BIO - John returned to Iowa and settled in Cedar County, where he dealt extensively in live stock. He died there of cancer, July 15, 1867, and was buried at Bethel Church Block 3, Lot 14 (South Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery). He was the fourth of seven children, of whom only two are now living: James W., who is living retired at Wilton, Iowa, and Sarah, who married and has since resided in Mansfield, Ohio.

He was a member of the GAR Post 110(Grand Army of the Republic). He enlisted August 12, 1861 Co B, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Iowa. He was a member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) 1861 veteran of Co B, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Iowa Post 110. John mustered but was rejected by mustering officer on August 12, 1861. John raised sheep, cattle, & hogs and grew wheat & corn.

There was a John Kelly who tried to enlist in Co. B, 2nd Iowa Cavalry but he was rejected. The John B. Kelly who served in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry Co.
