LELAND – George Alexander Ball, 89, of Leland, passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020 at Effie’s Place Assisted Living of Leland.

George was born March 28, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of E. Arthur Ball and Frances (Davies). George is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Merry; his children from his second marriage, Kristine (Paul Solli) Ball and Peter Ball; his step-daughter, Kathryn (Michael Meyer) Worden Meyer; and four grandchildren, Sara, Erik, Jessica, and Kristina and many other family members.

George grew up in Muncie, Indiana and Leland. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover. He received his bachelor’s degree from Williams College, which he dearly loved, and his master’s degree from the Wharton Business School.

As a young man, George served his nation in the U.S. Air Force at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In his following career, he began several entrepreneurial ventures, both in the U.S. Virgin Islands and in the Traverse City area. On September 22, 1990 in Traverse City he married Merry (Samuelson Worden) Ball. George and Merry traveled the world in the past, the only continents they did not visit were covered with snow and had magnetic poles.

He cared deeply about the environment and native plants and gave of his time to many causes. He was a founding board member of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy; he and his children made the first land donation to the Leelanau Conservancy. George also served on the Clinch Park Zoo Board, Leelanau County Parks and Recreation Board, Saving Birds Through Habitat Board, and was a member of Rotary.

George held a love for languages, books, and knowledge in general. He and Merry own and operate “Good Old Books” in Leland with a vast selection of used, old, and rare books. He spoke five languages fluently and dabbled in others.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Barbara and Dorothy Ann.

Thank you to his wonderful caregivers at Effie's, Hospice of Michigan, and the village of Leland which he loved.

Private family graveside services in Beechwood Cemetery have been held.
