We know very little about James Williams, if anyone has more information please contact Slimbridge Local History Society.
We have a Service record for James Williams Regimental Number 202825 with the Rank of "DMR" in the Worcester Regiment with service between 25th March 1915 and 19th June 1918 when he was discharged. The abbreviation DMR means Drummer although he is also referred to as a driver, on his death certificate. The rank of Driver would be abbreviated to "DVR" so there may be a transcription error, he was a Driver not Drummer.
The Pension record confirms most of the details but gives his Rank as Pvt. The reason for his discharge was "Pulm Tuberculosis" due to his war service. He died on 6th February 1920 as a result of Tuberculosis.
It appears his father was James S Williams moving to Gossington two years after his son enlisted, and another son, James Matthew. left for Birmingham 6 months after discharge. It would therefore appear that James Jnr spent little time in Slimbridge – but his father was still in Gossington when his son died and nominated him for inclusion on the War Memorial.
Although James is buried in Slimbridge Graveyard, his Grave was not marked until recently. Slimbridge Local History Society identified his burial location and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission erected a headstone on the 12th April 2022.
