Married 2nd: Lydia May McDowell Tierney, on October 28, 1905 at St. Joseph, Missouri. She was the stepdaughter of his older brother John Joel and had three children from her first marriage. They divorced before December 1910.

Tom worked for various railroads as a car repairer, carpenter and bridge engineer, among other jobs. By 1910 he had settled in Colorado with his son Jay. There they ventured in mining and land sales.

Although his marker shows 1861 as his year of birth, most other sources indicate 1860.
