Husband of Eliza Jane Wright. They married July 4, 1849 in Bedford County, Virginia.

Father of John Joel and Soloman Wylie, twins; James Mitchell; Cora M.; Henry Stephen; Samuel Thomas; Jubal Jefferson; Mary Etta; and William C.

About 1859 he and his family, along with those of several cousins, left Bedford County, Virginia and relocated to northwest Missouri, primarily Harrison County. Samuel's family also lived in Gentry and Clinton counties in Missouri before crossing the Missouri river to live at Elwood, Kansas.

This death notice appeared in the July 16, 1877 Troy, Kansas "Bulletin":

An old man by the name of Clayter [sic], of Elwood, was buried at the Bellemont graveyard last Tuesday.
