Josefa María de los Ángeles Ávila y Pico was born at Monterey, Alta California, México, on August 1, 1827, and baptized in the Presidio Chapel (SC Baptism 03504). She was the daughter of cabo (corporal) Miguel Antonio Nicolas Ávila y Osuña and María Encarnación Inocenta Pico y Cota. Josefa died just a few days later and was buried in the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) cemetery on August 10, 1827 (SC Death 02606).
