María Rafaela de los Ángeles Ávila y Pico was born at Monterey, Alta California, México, on October 24, 1828, and baptized in the Presidio Chapel October 26 (SC Baptism 03573). She was the daughter of Miguel Antonio Ávila y Osuña (Sep. 9, bap. 11, 1798 [BP Baptism 00179]) and María de la Encarnación Inocenta Pico y Cota (Dec. 28, 1810 [SC Baptism 02796]). María became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. She married José Antonio Lugardo de la Guerra y Ortega at Mission San Miguel August 19, 1852. In 1870, José and Rafaela de la Guerra were living as boarders in the household of William L. Beebe, at San Luís Obispo, California (1870 US Census). After Jose's death in 1874 Rafaela married (2) Frank Tierney at San Luís Obispo about 1882. She died at San Luis Obispo November 20, 1908, and was buried in the Old Mission Cemetery.Please Note: Maria who went by Rafaela was alive in 1880 San luis obispo would marry Frank Tierney. She was mentioned in her mother's Obituary in 1886 as the first child. See mother's memorial, she was also stating in 1900 census being born in Oct 1828
