Effie Patillo, who is buried beside her brother Claud (who, like Effie, never married) was the sister of Minnie Patillo, the wife of Charles Taylor. When Minnie died, Effie moved from her Billingsley, Alabama, to care for Minnie's daughter Claudia Alta Taylor (named for her uncle Claud), becoming a mother figure to Ms. Taylor, who was better known by her childhood nickname of Ladybird.
Miss Effie was a very keen business person- when her niece Ladybird wed "poor schoolteacher" Lyndon Baines Johnson, it was Miss Effie who paid for the wedding- and she left her considerable estate to her niece. Ladybird inherited and surpassed her aunt in business savvy.
Ladybird Johnson's estate included approximately 3,000 acres in the community of Billingsley, Alabama, much of it surrounding the cemetery where her beloved aunt and grandparents are buried. The cemetery is not family only, but it is located very close behind the Patillo family home where Ladybird spent most of her summers in childhood. A view of the house from the cemetery is included in this section.
