History

It has been observed that every country in Great Britain has produced a prophet/leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In her unique way, Ireland is no exception. On August 15, 1745, William Lee was born in Carrickfergus, Ireland. Twenty-five years later he sailed for America and landed in Philadelphia in 1770. Within a year he married Susannah Chaffings and moved with his bride to North Carolina where, during the next few years, four sons were born to them. Tragically for the young family, Susannah died in April 1775, shortly after the birth of their fourth son, Samuel. Though none could have known at the time, Samuel Lee would eventually become the great great great grandfather of Harold B. Lee, the eleventh president and prophet of the Church.

Centennial Grave Dedication 1959

"Samuel and his sons settled in Tooele and Samuel never did go on to the gold fields. He joined the Church in 1851, shortly after arriving in Utah. He died eight years later on April 14th 1859 and is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Note: The family organization met at his gravesite on 2 July 1959 at 4:30 PM for the Centennial dedication of the Samuel Lee grave plaque which was placed there also a lovely wreath of flowers. I was there." --Jennie Woodbury Lee
