His first wife was Mary Crafts Hovey, daughter of Thomas Crafts and Abigail Dickinson Crafts.

His second wife was Hannah Dickinson Hovey, daughter of Samuel Dickinson and Martha Bridgeman Dickinson.

He was the son of Thomas Hovey and Sarah Cooke Hovey.

His maternal grandparents were Aaron Cook III and Sarah Westwood Cook.

Children(by first marriage): Mary Hovey and Martha Hovey.

Children(by second marriage): Thomas Hovey III, Hannah Hovey, Sarah Hovey, and Miriam Hovey. All died young.
