Gary was born to Wayne & Irene (Tracy) Smothers in Mark, Iowa on May 29, 1949. He received his education from Centerville High School in 1968. On Sept. 2, 1972, Gary was united in marriage to Jean Marie Stufflebeam. To this union came three children: Kris, Dustin and Carrie.

He was employed as a mechanic for the City of Centerville for 20 years before he retired in 2015. He then spent a lot of his time driving a semi and helping local farmers. He was also the county trustee of Pleasant Township.

Gary had many hobbies bowling, racing, demolition derby and playing cards with family and friends. He would talk to anyone and never knew a stranger. He loved to spend time with his grandkids and watching their sporting events as he cheered them on. You could always hear him over everyone else. He enjoyed fishing at his pond with the grandkids and making sure they had all the best toys. He loved going to swap meets and was a professional negotiator.
