Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Colorado Territory Governor. Nicknamed "Old Straw Hat", he served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 19th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. After the Union opted to allow African American troops into the Army, he became the Superintendent of Colored Troops in the Department of Arkansas. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 19, 1865 "for meritorious services". He later served as Governor of the Colorado Territory from 1865 to 1867, and as a United States commercial agent in Canada. His grave was unmarked from many years before a simple government issue headstone was placed there.
