Corporal Carl Hankins, Tech 5th Grade, son of Stephen Dee "S.D." and Rutha Mildred "Millie" (Ford) Hankins, was born April 18, 1923, at Protem, Missouri, and departed this life on September 18, 1945 at the age of 22 years and five months.
He lived at Protem until he moved with his parents to Bradleyville, Missouri, in 1930. He made this his home until he entered the U.S. Army in 1943. For two years he served his country overseas as a truck driver in England, France, Belgium and Germany. On the morning of September 18, 1945, he was killed in a train accident near Antwerp, Belgium.
On October 17, 1942 he was united in marriage to BeEtta Boyd and to this union was born one daughter, Carletta. He is survived by his wife and daughter; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Dee Hankins; four sisters, Mrs. Lula Marier, Mrs. Taney Irby, and Mrs. Vesta Chandler, of Springfield, and Mrs. Jane Shaw of Wichita, Kansas; four brothers, Lloyd Hankins of Reuter, Edd Hanlons, Dee Hankins, and Virgil Hankins of Garrison; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 3, 1945 at 2 p.m. in the Johnson school, one mile east of Kissee Mills, with the Rev. Harold Hurst of Ozark officiating. Burial was made in the Johnson cemetery under the direction of the Harris Funeral Home of Chadwick. Graveside services were conducted by the VFW.
