Bessie Wood Southern Pioneer Mother
Bessie Southern Pioneer area mother, 79, passed away at Cleveland on Saturday, Jan 31, and funeral services were held in Blackburn on Tuesday afternoon.
Born May 24, 1896 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma she married Charlie Southern on Nov. 16, 1913 at Mena, Ark and they moved to the Skedee area from Kinta, Oklahoma.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Blackburn as long as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by 4 children, Roy, Bernice, Troy, James Franklin and 2 grand children Carol Sue and Tana besides her husband Charlie.
Surviors include 4 daughters and 2 sons; Mrs. Gladys McCray, Mrs. Ernestine Van Deventer, Sam Southern all of Skedee, Mrs. Thelma Lee McCray of Perkins, Bill Southern of Newkirk and Mrs. Pat Hickson of Cleveland.
Also surviving are 17 grand children and 23 great grand children and three sisters Mrs. Bertha Wilcox, Daisy Bryan, both of Quinton, Okla., and Mrs. Ollie Brown of Muskogee.
The Rev Jerry Southern officated at the service at 2:30 p. m. Tues Feb 3 at the First Baptist Church in Blackburn.
Interment was in the Skedee cemetery under direction of Poteet Funeral Home.
