Mary Ann Askren is the daughter of Thomas Askren and Mary (Demoret) Askren.
On September 22, 1842,in Marion County, Indiana, Mary Ann married James Askren McIlvain, son of James J. McIlvain, Jr. and Mary (Askren) McIlvain.
Mary and and James had eight children, all born in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Her husband died when she was pregnant with her youngest child, Serepta McIlvain, who was born in 1870.
Mary Ann moved to a farm and with the help of older sons, she raised her family. She also took in orphan children from the neighborhood and raised them.
