RITES TO BE AT GALENA


Erie, Kan., May 9.—Funeral services for Mrs. Ben Carney, 86 years old, who died Wednesday afternoon in Mercy hospital at Parsons, will be held at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Pierce funeral home here, with the Rev. John Henry Cain officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4 o'clock at the Galena cemetery.

Mrs. Carney suffered a serious hip fracture April 2. She had resided here the past five years with a daughter, Mrs. F. A. Newell.

A native of Illinois, she had lived in the Galena area the greater part of her life. Her husband, Ben Carney, who died at Galena in 1936, was among the first mine owners of that district. A son, Ivan Carney, died in Galena April 2.

She is also survived by another daughter, Mrs. C. B. Coles of Galena, and a granddaughter.

Galena, Kan., May 10.—Graveside services for Mrs. Ben Carney who died Monday in a hospital at Parsons, will be held at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Galena cemetery.

A service will be conducted at Erie, Kan., at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon before the body is brought here. The Rev. John Henry Cain of Erie will officiate Mrs. Carney, former resident of Galena, had resided at Erie with a daughter, Mrs. F. A. Newell, for the past five years.

ERIE — After a lingering illness Georgia Newell, 78, died today at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons.

She moved to Erie in 1930 from Oklahoma. Born and reared in Galena, she graduated with the class of 1925 from college at Pittsburg. She taught commercial courses in schools in Chetopa, Pittsburg and Erie. She was a member of the Erie Christian Church and taught the Berean Sunday school class of the church.

She was married Sept 17, 1927 in Galena to Fred Newell, who died Jan 22, 1971.

A niece, Mrs. Samme Blair, Yates Center, survives.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Erie Christian Church with the Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery under direction of Pierce Funeral Home.

Contributions in Newell's memory may be left at the funeral home for the Christian Church building fund.

ERIE — A long-time resident, Fred A. Newell, 70, died at 7:30 a.m. today at his home after an illness of a year and a half.

He was born Aug. 3, 1900 in Cheyenne, Wyo., the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. [Fred Adams] Newell Sr., and the family moved to Erie when he was 12. He married Georgia Carney Sept. 17, 1927, in Galena. They lived in Seminole, Okla., where he worked as an electrical foreman for an oil company three years, before moving to Erie.

A World War I veteran, he was a member of the Erie American Legion, the George L. Hendricks post, had served as post commander and was a member of the Past Commanders Club. He also was a member of the Christian Church, and of the Berean Class of the church.

Besides the widow, of the home, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ed Owens, Bentonville, Ark., and a brother, Wallace Newell, Parsons. He was preceded in death by an infant son and an infant daughter.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Christian Church with the Rev. Norman Rogers officiating. Interment will be in East Hill Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home.

Ivan Carney, Georgia (Carney) Newell, and Ezla "BlueEyes" (Carney) Cole.

Ezla never went by that name, she went by blue eyes all her life. Nobody knows her as Ezla. I have searched both names and cannot find anything telling her death date. Just her husbands name and her daughters I found as Blue Eyes Cole in the 1930 census.
