Two Thousand Dollars.

What greater argument in favor of the A. O. U. W. can be offered than this: Chas. A. Allen was laid to rest on Sunday. The Sunday following just one week from the date of interment, a draft for $2,000 was placed in the hands of his wife. Mr. Allen had been a member of the order less than a year. His initiation fee, dues and assessments amounted to less than twenty dollars. For the investment of this small amount his wife and little ones who would have otherwise been left unprovided for, have two thousand dollars and are not left to the cold charity of a heedless, heartless world. Who can excuse a man for failure to provide for his family in the face of such evidence as this.

Biographical Notes:

Using a birthdate calculator, he was born October 12, 1854. However, the 2 census records for him that could be confirmed (1880 and 1885) both have his birth year about 1859.

Charles was born in Pennsylvania. His parents were Irish. He came to Kansas from Illinois, according to the 1885 census. He had at least one known brother, Frank Allen, of Chetopa, Kansas.

Charles and Hattie married in Chetopa, Labette County, Kansas, on April 29, 1880.

Charles and Hattie are shown with 2 children in the 1885 census—the oldest is Mark Allen, and the youngest is Freddie Allen. Charles was a laborer and a miner.

After the death of Charles, Hattie moved in October of 1889 to Carthage, Missouri with her family of children: Mark, Fred, and Frank.

Hattie married a second time to William G Allen, also from Pennsylvania, on August 21, 1894, in Carthage.

In the 1900 census, when they were living in Jasper County, Missouri, Hattie’s son Frank is shown as being born in April 1886. William and Hattie had several children together: Vira, Vera, Nettie, and Nellie [Taylor].
