Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton. SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Karen Larson officiating.

VINTON — The Rev. Herbert Clyde Shaffer, 93, died Sunday at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
He was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Masontown, W.Va., to Dorsey Allen and Minnie Mae Knisell Shaffer.

On July 3, 1936, he married Helen L. Hawkins in Albright, W.Va. She died in 1988.

He then married Sarah Van Buren on Nov. 18, 1989, in Vinton.

Following graduation from West Virginia Wesleyan in Buchkannon, W.Va., he attended West Minister Seminary in Maryland.He served congregations in New Hartford and Parkersburg before becoming pastor of Stewart Memorial Methodist Church in Vinton and Urbana United Methodist Church. During winter months while wintering in Texas, he provided pastoral care to the sick.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; one son, Herbert (Martha) Shaffer Jr. of San Diego; daughters, Diora Hewer of Camanche, Wailana (William) Barker of Rochester, Minn., Erma Souhrada of Joshua, Texas, Gwen (Vic) Szymcek of Harrin, Ill., and Charlene (Bruce) Posekany of Cedar Falls; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.A memorial fund has been established.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, three sons-in-law, three brothers and three sisters.
