Bret Arnold and Megan Herr were on their way back from a date in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Arnold stopped his car behind a line of traffic on the highway trying to avoid a van driven by Steven Adams that was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of I-96, near the Ottawa Avenue exit. A second vehicle, a van driven by drunk driver Kerry Brougham, rear-ended Arnold's car, which burst into flames on impact and killed the couple at about 6:40 PM on March 7, 1999.



Bret Arnold, 18, of Holland, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a senior at West Ottawa High School, where he participated in cross country and track. He had been accepted to Michigan State University to study engineering arts, and was a member of Beechwood Reformed Church.

Surviving are his parents, John and Jan Arnold of Holland; a sister, Kara Arnold of Ann Arbor; brother, Scott Arnold at home; grandmother, Ethelwyn Hunt of Caro; aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will take place 3 p.m. Thursday at Beechwood Reformed Church, 895 Ottawa Beach Road, with the Revs. Marlin Vis and Larry Terlouw officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
