Bret Arnold and Megan Herr were on their way back from a date in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Arnold stopped his car behind a line of traffic on the highway trying to avoid a van driven by Steven Adams that was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of I-96, near the Ottawa Avenue exit. A second vehicle, a van driven by drunk driver Kerry Brougham, rear-ended Arnold's car, which burst into flames on impact and killed the couple at about 6:40 PM on March 7, 1999.



Megan Elizabeth Herr, 16, of Holland, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was a junior at West Ottawa High School, and a member of SAE, SADD and Beechwood Reformed Church.

Surviving are her parents, Douglas and Jane Herr of Holland; a sister, Laura Herr, at home; grandparents, Robert and Faye Herr of Holgate, Ohio, and Leon and Katherine Genuit of Napoleon, Ohio; great-grandparents, Mamie Herr of Holgate, and Rosa Genuit of Napoleon; aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will take place 3 p.m. Thursday at Beechwood Reformed Church, 895 Ottawa Beach Road, with the Revs. Marlin Vis and Larry Terlouw officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
