AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Suzanne Hardy Beaufort Benson entered into rest on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at University Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds Street, Augusta, Georgia, 30901. Mrs. Benson was valedictorian of both Tubman High School as well as Sweetbriar College in Virginia. After graduation from Sweetbriar, she worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Mexico, was the social editor of the Augusta Chronicle, and head librarian of the Jeff Maxwell Branch Library in South Augusta. She was a long standing member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she worked in the soup kitchen, and a volunteer and contributor with the Alzheimer's Association. In her constant endeavor to expand access to the arts in Augusta, she became founding director of the Borrow/Buy Art Gallery at the Gertrude Herbert Art Institute. As founding director of the Augusta Ballet, she was instrumental in bringing professional dance to Augusta.

She is survived by: her daughters Bon Ellis, Zanne Colton, and her son-in-law Ron Colton, all of Augusta. She is also survived by her former husband, Ira J. Beaufort of North Augusta, and her cousins, Carol Cassetti of Columbia, and William Steele of Eastman, Georgia. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care shown to Mrs. Benson by her caregivers Polly, Rosie, Mary, Thea, Asha, Zelma, Daisy, Jackie, Shanta, and Lisa.
