Rachel (Carmen) Maltbie was this writer's 5th great grandmother.

Rachel was the daughter of Rev. Joshua Carmen (1759-1844) who was born in Maryland and died in Greene County, Ohio; and Sarah (Bruce) Carmen (1764-1839) who was born in Virginia and died in Greene County, Ohio. It is believed that Rachel had the following siblings:

Mary Carmen 1779 –
Caleb Carmen 1781 – 1781
Margaret Carmen 1783 – 1843
Jane Carman 1787 – 1886
Nancy Carmen 1789 – 1840
Joshua Carman 1793 – 1859
Sarah Carmen 1795 – 1823
James Carmen 1796 – 1862
Eleanor Carmen 1798 –
William Carmen 1804 – 1896
Clarinda Elmina Carmen 1810 – 1880

According to Robison's History of Greene County, Ohio, Rachel Carman married Ammi Maltbie on September 25, 1806. They had the following known children:

Milo B. Maltbie 1807 – 1836
Melinda Maltbie 1809 – 1887
Warren M. Maltbie 1811 – 1869
Josiah G. Maltbie 1813 –
Eliza Maltbie 1818 –
Sally Maltbie 1821 – 1822
Alma Maltbie 1823 – 1824
Nancy Maltbie 1830 – 1831

The Maltbie family were farmers in Greene County, Ohio. The only census this family is in, which lists all family members is 1850 in Greene County. At that time, Ammi was 71, wife Rachel was 63, and only the two youngest children were still at home, Alma 27, and Nancy 20. Rachel died that same year in November, and Ammi died in 1854. It is assumed both are buried at Fairview Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, although Rachel's tombstone is not visable. Ammi's stone is broken and lying on the ground. There appears to be another bottom of a broken stone in the ground near Ammi's grave which may have been Rachel's stone, but the top portion is not there.
