Betty Ann (Markert) Dennis passed away peacefully on May 15th at the Westerly Health Center. Betty was born October 3, 1927 in Cordele, Georgia, daughter of Karl and Annaberta (Peacock) Markert. During her lifetime, she and her "Yankee" husband of 65 years lived in both the south and in New England, settling after retirement in Silver Springs, FL (a favorite childhood spot), and ultimately coming to the Westerly area to be near family.
Betty served as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools for the Foster-Glocester school department and, later, the Yarmouth, ME school department, positions she enjoyed greatly until retirement. She was the best of moms to her three children who, growing up, enjoyed the benefit of her cooking, sewing, knitting and, most of all, her love. She was smart with a wry sense of humor, and loved time spent with her family. Once retired, she made beautiful crafts for family and friends. Each grandchild cherishes their Christmas stocking and stuffed animals. All her life and even to the end, Betty was an avid reader, whose idea of perfection was a comfortable chair and a stack of books.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Ann Lain, of Westerly and her son and daughter-in-law, Karl Dennis and Cathy Scanlan of Warren, RI; six grandchildren: Kim, Madeleine, Spencer, Jesse, Allison, and Jacob; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Dennis, her son, Mark Dennis, and her son-in-law, Richard Lain. The family wishes to thank everyone at the Westerly Health Center who gave Betty 3 ½ years of skilled and loving care. Our gratitude, also, to Beacon Hospice for their physical, emotional and spiritual support in her last months. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice.
