Mr. Armentrout died Tuesday at his home. He had cancer.
He retired at the rank of major from the Air Force. He had served in the Vietnam War and had received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Meritorious Service Medal.
He was born June 16, 1944, at Hampton, Va. He grew up in Norfolk, Va., and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had lived in Topeka since 1987.
He married Shirley Kaufman on April 17, 1971, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Allison Armentrout, Charlotte Armentrout and Becky Armentrout, all of the home; a son, Robbie, of the home; his mother, Harriet Armentrout, Front Royal, Va.; and a brother, James, Winston-Salem, N.C.
