US Congressman. He was attending Iowa State University, at the stated of the Civil War, when enlisted Union Army, serving until October 1865, when mustered out as Captain in command of Company H, 2nd Iowa US Cavalry. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Marengo, Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa State Senate (1873-78), member of the board of regents of the State University of Iowa (1880-86), curator of the State Historical Society of Iowa (1881-85), Mayor of Marengo, Iowa, (1885-86) and attorney for the city council of Marengo, (1896-1900). In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress and served until his death at age 61 in Chicago, Illinois.
