Son of Abial and Rebecca (Currier) Shurtleff. He was descended from William Shurtleff, the first of the name in America, who was killed by lightning at Marshfield, MA on 23 June 1666. He was admitted to the Bar of Washington County in March 1863 and practiced law in Montpelier. On 28 Apr 1868 he married Elizabeth M. Pratt, daughter of John Augustine and Arminda M. Pratt of Marshfield. Their children were Harry and Maud. From book, "Men of Vermont, an Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters...."
