Funeral services were held Monday for two men who were killed in a helicopter crash Thursday in Hawthorne.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in Grace Chapel, Inglewood Park Cemetery with Hardin and Flanagan Mortuary in charge of arrangements, for Lt. Merlyn L. Birt, 51, of 5029 W. 138th St., Hawthorne.
Native of Kansas
Lt. Birt was a native of Arlington, Kan. He had lived in the South Bay for the past 21 years. For more than 30 years he had been an aircraft pilot and mechanic. He was employed by Northrop Corp. in Hawthorne for 15 years. He also was a member of the OX 5 Club, aircraft owners association. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia, and three sons, Richard P. and John W. of the home, and David D. of 370 Acacia Ave., Hawthorne. Other survivors are two brothers.
Officiating at Lt. Birt's services was the Rev. Virgil Zirbel of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Hawthorne. Interment followed in Inglewood Park Cemetery.
