Vera Catherine Gittemeier | 1938 - 2017 | Obituary
Vera Gittemeier, 79, of Jacksonville, Mo, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at her home.
Vera Catherine Gittemeier was born on February 27, 1938 in Florissant Mo to parents James and Anna (Birkemeier) McMenamy. She was the sixth child of nine. Vera graduated from St. Marks Catholic High School in 1956 and later went on to work for a period of time at McDonnell Douglas. It was during this period of time that while hanging around with a group of friends Vera met Elmer and later went on to marry him on October 22 1960, and they later moved to “the farm” in Jacksonville Mo, in 1972. From this marriage came four children Lynn, Lisa, Matt, and Frank. On May 26th 1990 she lost her husband Elmer.
Throughout her adult life Vera enjoyed the gift of having many friends and family that she truly enjoyed visiting- whether it be going back to Florissant to visit with the Kortes, Thompsons, Renauds, Perkins and numerous others. Or traveling to Springfield, MO to visit with the McMenamys, or the other Springfield, IL to visit with the Mandevilles. Then there were the countless number of friends that she accumulated in Moberly whether it is at the Moose Club, or the Eagles club. In the late 80’s Vera began working at the Moose lodge, and then started to bartend at the Eagles. Vera prided herself in the fact that she bartended at the Eagles for over 20 years and only once did she call in sick. In the mid-nineties Vera especially enjoyed spending time visiting and tormenting her neighbor Charlie, as they spent time going to different places like the State Fair.
Above all Vera enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at her home, where she would cook for them. She showed her love for her grandchildren through the numerous games she would play with them, including kickball, even well into her 70’s. She also was considered the “camp cook” and matriarch to the deer season guys.
On March 1st 2017 Vera lost a battle to cancer that she had bravely fought. Vera was preceded in death by her parents James and Anna, her husband Elmer, one grandchild Johnathan, and sisters Rosalyn McMenamy, and Ruth Thompson, Sister in law Virginia McMenamy, and Brother in law Merlin Renaud. She is survived by her children Lynn (Tammi) Gittemeier, Lisa (Kurt) Schmiedeskamp, Matt (Kim) Gittemeier , and Frank (Kerry) Gittemeier, 10 grandchildren Chelsey Kindell, Christopher Gittemeier, Travis Gittemeier, Adrianna Haynes, Sarah Knuppel, Kaleena Knuppel, Katey Schmiedeskamp, Steven Gittemeier, Patrick Gittemeier, and Reggie Gittemeier, 3 great grandchildren Ryan Kindell, Ellie Kindell, and Ava Evans, sisters Teresa Renaud, Alma Mandeville (Bob), Eilleen Laramie (Jack), brothers Justin McMenamy, Raymond McMenamy (Donna), and Alvin S.M., and Brother in law Ronald Thompson along with many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Macon with Father Alvin McMenamy and Father Ben Nwosu officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Macon. Prayer service will begin at 4:30 pm on Friday with a visitation to follow from 5-7 pm, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon. The family suggests memorials to the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery or the American Cancer Society
