John F. Smith (sic), colored, aged 50, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at his home, 1208 Mineral avenue, of consumption. He leaves a wife and several children Smith was an active member in the Uniform Rank, Colored Knights of Pythias. The funeral was held this afternoon with burial in Galena cemetery.

Although his obituary would indicate otherwise, his name was James Roe Smith, and he was entered in the 1900 census of Galena, Kansas, as James Smith, who lived at 1208 Mineral with his wife, Mary J Smith, and children, Edward Smith 18; Son, "Clearence" Smith 14; Son, "Alada" Smith 9; Daughter, Oliver (sic) Smith 7; Son, Raymond Smith 3; and Son, Stanford Smith 2 months, all of the children born in Kansas. His birth was given as October 1854 in Mississippi.
