EDWARD ELISHA SAPP
SUCCUMBS TO HEART
TROUBLE, AGE 72 YEARS

Edward Elisha Sapp
, aged 72 years, a widely known and able attorney of Galena, died shortly after 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at St. John's hospital at Joplin where he was taken for treatment Saturday night. Death was attributed to kidney and bladder trouble and heart trouble, the heart having been greatly enlarged. When Mr. Sapp was taken to the hospital for observation it was apparent he had suffered some sort of stroke. His condition became serious at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday morning when he lapsed into a state of coma.

Mr. Sapp was born at Jackson, Mich., July 12, 1858, and his parents were Rev. Reison (sic) and Margaret Ferry Sapp. He removed Michigan to Kansas in March, 1877, and had been a resident of Galena since January, 1884. The only official positions he ever held were the judge of the probate court of Cherokee county and judge of the Eleventh judicial district of Kansas. As a democrat he always took an active in politics. In 1924 he sought the nomination for United States senator for Kansas, but was unsuccessful. His brother, the late Wm. F. Sapp, had previously unsuccessfully sought the same office. Out of a family of six boys five have died sudden deaths, four having succumbed to heart trouble and the fifth was struck by lightning.

During the last few years Mr. Sapp was not actively engaged in the practice of law, but spent most of his time at his country home just west of Galena. The surviving relatives are his widow Mrs. Mary E. Sapp; a daughter, Mrs. Vira Sapp, at home; a son, Thomas T. Sapp, of Treece, Kans.; a brother, John Sapp, of Amarillo, Tex.; and five grandchildren, all of Galena.

Funeral services for Mr. Sapp will be held at his home [Clear View Place] (sic) [Elks club] about a mile west of Galena Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The final resting place will be the family mausoleum in the Galena cemetery.

The Galena Journal, Galena, Kansas.

HON. EDWARD E. SAPP, an attorney and ex-Probate judge and ex-judge of the Court of Common Pleas, whose portrait is shown on the opposite page, is one of the large capitalists and leading citizens of Galena.

He was born at Jackson, Michigan, July 12, 1858, and is a son of Rev. Rezin and Margaret (Peyreferry) Sapp.

Judge Sapp was educated in the schools at Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his father was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. When he came to Kansas, he spent some time herding cattle in the eastern part of the State. Later he located in Cherokee County and studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1883. In January of the following year he removed to Galena and entered into partnership with his brother, W. F. Sapp, under the firm name of Sapp & Sapp, which continued until 1886. He then continued alone until 1891 when he entered into partnership with George Webb, under the firm style of Webb & Sapp, which continued from 1891 to 1896, when he was elected Probate judge. After holding the office three years, he resigned in the middle of his second term, and was then honored by election as judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Cherokee and Crawford counties, and continued in this responsible position until 1900. Since July 5, 1904, Judge Sapp has been the senior member of the law firm of Sapp & Brown, having offices in the Opera House Block, which he erected in 1900. This firm has the most expensively furnished offices in the county, the suite consisting of public and private offices and a library of several thousand volumes.

The city of Galena has profited greatly by Judge Sapp's public spirit. It now has an Opera House of which it may be very proud, the seating capacity being 900, having a gallery and parquet circle and a stage with dimensions of 47 by 36 feet. All the equipments are modern throughout and it compares favorably with like structures in much larger cities.

Judge Sapp was married in 1885, at Galena, to Mary E. [sic] Andrews, who was born in New York, and they have three children: Dexter, Thomas and Viva. The family home is an elegant residence on Galena avenue and the family take part in the social life of the city.

Politically, Judge Sapp is one of the leading Democrats of Cherokee County. He served as city attorney from 1885 to 1892 and again, from 1901 to 1903. His professional standing, either at the bar or on the bench, cannot be assailed. He served his fellow citizens for many years in high positions, with the justice, fairness and dignity which reflects upon him the greatest credit, both as an upright exponent of the law and as a man of high personal aims and character.

As usual there are mistakes and we can't be entirely sure of the info:

I have no idea how he is Edwin E. Sapp in this article.

www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?file=Data&report=SingleArticle&ArticleID=0022262

Sapp, Edwin E.

The following data is extracted from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans.

Edwin E. Sapp. There has been a Sapp connected with the bar of Cherokee County almost since the City of Galena was founded. Coming to that town in January, 1884, after having worked and studied earnestly to prepare himself for the bar, earning his own living in the meantime, Edwin E. Sapp in a comparatively brief time had won the approbation and favor of a considerable clientage.

In the years that have followed hardly a member of the Cherokee County Bar has been shown greater honors and has been accorded a larger and more profitable share in the civil practice of the courts. As long as his private interests would permit, his fellow citizens kept him employed in some phase of public life. He served as city attorney of Galena twelve years, was probate judge of Cherokee County two terms, judge of the Court of Common Pleas one term, and for another term sat on the district bench as judge.

In later years his business interests have become paramount to his professional. Judge Sapp is president of the Giant Mining and Royalties Company, a director in the George L. McCullagh Lead and Zinc Company, a director in the Lockport Lead & Zinc Company, director in the Scarlet Kid Mining Company, and the Pioneer Lead & Zinc Company. He has acquired some large property interests. His law offices are in the Sapp Building at Galena and he owns his home at 705 Galena Avenue, four other dwelling houses in Galena, two farms aggregating 200 acres in Cherokee County, and owns some mineral lands in the same county.

Judge Sapp is descended from some very fine families. His paternal ancestry came originally from Holland and located in Virginia in colonial times. He was born after both his grandfathers died. His paternal grandfather George Sapp was born in Ohio and died in Knox County of that state. The maternal line is one of special interest. His maternal grandfather was Peter Pierferry, who was born at the old artillery training ground and fortress of Le Fere. At one time the town and its environs were part of the feudal possessions of the Ferry family. Thus it was that Peter Pierferry became the hereditary colonel of the Le Fere Regiment. He was a graduate of the St. Croix Military College and the Berna Military College, and a fellow student in these colleges with him was the young Corsican, Napoleon Bonaparte. It is a matter of particular interest that Napoleon after his graduation became a sub-lieutenant under Col. Peter Pierferry in the Le Fere Regiment. In fact these two men were in a number of campaigns together. After Napoleon reached the pinnacle of his career and became emperor, Colonel Pierferry, being a Royalist in sympathy, abandoned his cause and securing a passport from Napoleon came to America and settled on Belle Isle in Lake Erie. That was in 1811. In 1812 he removed to Sandusky, Ohio, on account of Indian troubles. He was a member of the Ohio State Militia during the War of 1812. From Ohio he removed to Fort Raisin, near Monroe, Michigan, and was variously honored there, serving several terms as county treasurer.

Judge Sapp's father was Reason Sapp, who was born near the site of Kenyon College in Knox County, Ohio, in 1816. He was reared there, and subsequently became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a member of the old Ohio Conference when its jurisdiction extended over Michigan. After his marriage in Monroe, Michigan, he spent most of his time in the service of the Michigan Conference, and died at Grand Rapids in 1873. He was a republican and a Mason. The maiden name of his wife was Margaret Pierferry, who was born at Sandusky, Ohio, in 1821, and died at Galena, Kansas, in 1897. Their children were: Perry, who became a farmer and died at Ionia, Michigan, in 1881; Dexter T., who served for three years in the Seventh Michigan Cavalry during the Civil war and is now an attorney practicing at Gunnison, Colorado; William F., a veteran attorney of Galena, Kansas, mentioned elsewhere; Judge Edwin C.; Charles, a manufacturer of automobiles at Jackson, Michigan; John, an attorney at Gunnison, Colorado.

Judge Edwin E. Sapp was born in the home of his parents at Jackson, Michigan, July 12, 1858. He attended public school at Grand Rapids, but at the age of thirteen became dependent upon his own resources. His father died about that time and he had to hew out his own career. Many lines of work contributed to his support, and he worked as a gardener, at the printing trade, and finally secured by his own efforts the opportunity and means to study law. He carried on his law studies in the offices of one of the oldest and best known law firms in Chicago at the time, Dexter, Herrick & Allen. The two younger members of that firm died recently, and were among the foremost lawyers of Chicago.

Judge Sapp was admitted to the bar in 1883, and in January of the following year came to Galena. In politics he is a democrat, is a member of the Cherokee County and American Bar associations, belongs to the Community Club of Galena and to Lodge No. 677 of the Elks.

In 1885 at Galena he married Miss Mary E. Aldrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Aldrich of Catskill, New York. Both her parents are now deceased. Her father was for many years in the livery business. William F. Sapp, distinguished lawyer and politician, residing at Galena, is a native of Michigan, in which state he was born at Grand Rapids, Aug. 30, 1856. He is one of six sons born unto Resin Sapp and Margaret Lenora (Pyre-Ferry) Sapp. His father was born at Danville, Knox county, Ohio, in 1816, and died in Michigan at the age of fifty-seven. He was a Methodist minister, and at a very early date went to Michigan as a missionary among the Indians, and his life work was performed in that state. The mother of Mr. Sapp was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and was of French lineage. She died at Galena, Kan., in 1897. In Michigan, William F. Sapp was reared, and educated in the public schools of that state, studied law at Grand Rapids, his native city, and came to Kansas in 1879, and in that same year was admitted to the bar at Columbus, Cherokee county. He located at Galena, where he has continued to reside and to practice his profession. As a lawyer Mr. Sapp has long maintained a position among the ablest of Kansas. He has enjoyed the confidence of a large clientage for many years, and aside from his profession he has taken an active part in the development of the mining interests and public weal at Galena, while in political affairs he has been no less active. As a leader of the Democratic party in Kansas he is, perhaps, the most widely known man in the state. Since the year 1880 there has not been a political campaign in which he has not borne a prominent part, for since that date Mr. Sapp has been a noted campaign speaker and political worker and leader. He has been a member of the state Democratic central committee for twenty-two years; was chairman of the committee in 1904, and in 1910 he was chosen the Kansas national committeeman of the National Democratic Committee. He was a delegate-at-large to the national Democratic presidential convention at Chicago in 1892 and has also served as congressional committeeman of his party. He never held and always declined office. Fraternally, Mr. Sapp is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of the Knights of Pythias, and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

In 1886, Mr. Sapp married Miss Mary E. Wood, a native of Quincy, Ill., a daughter of Daniel C. Wood, and granddaughter of Governor John Wood, of Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Sapp have four children: Peyre-Ferry, Marinne, William and Helen.

Mr. Sapp has always manifested deep interest in public affairs, and among his fellow citizens he is held in highest esteem. He is the archiect of his own success in life. From an humble station in life he has risen to prominence and affluence, forging his way to the front.

HON.

Judge and Mrs. Sapp have three children: Dexter is a graduate of the law department of the Missouri State University and is now practicing at Galena. Vira graduated from the State Manual Training Normal School at Pittsburg, Kansas, and Christian College at Columbia, Missouri, and is still at home. Thomas is a graduate of the Kansas School of Mines and is a mine operator, with home at Galena.
