Attorney, Educator, Civil War Union Officer. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of German immigrants. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1855 and later became president of the Woodward Alumnal Association and played a large part in erecting the statue memorial at the school of William Woodward. He graduated from the Cincinnati Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1876. During the Civil War, he enlisted with the 138th Ohio National Guard Infantry and was mustered into Company E as a 1st Lieutenant. He also served as post engineer at Fort Ohio on the Appomattox River. He returned to Cincinnati after the war and became immersed in the public schooling system and held several noteable offices. He also practiced as an attorney in Cincinnati. He died at his residence in Walnut Hills when he was 86 years old.
