George W. Dixon, 82 of 13507 Reeston Road, died Saturday. Native of Houston over 50 years. Veteran Spanish-American War. Graduate of Baylor University School of Law. Practiced in Houston member of the editorial staff at the Houston Chronicle. He wrote extensively for the betterment of the living conditions in the Texas prison system, which eventually terminated in public hearings and corrective measures. he was the candiate in 1924 for the governorship of Texas, opposing Ma Ferguson. He established a newspaper in Portland, Oregan, which is still being published. He was a past director of publicity for the Houston Chamber of Commerce. He also served several years as president of the Oregon State Hotel Association. He was the author of several books of poetry that were published. Survivors: Daughter, Mrs. Josephine Gallion, Houston; son, Kenneth Dixon, Houston; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services 3 P.M. Tuesday Pat H. Foley North Houston Chapel, Rev Joe Love, pastor of the Melrose Baptist Church officiating. Burial in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. George was named Jesse Lee Dixon; however, he chaged it after he served in the Spanish American War.
He married Marie Whittman Thompson. She was born 1871 in England.
