Mother of Houston Attorney Expires
Texas' dwindling band of pioneer mothers was again thinned with the recent death of Mrs. S.M. Dixon, 89, mother of George Dixon, Houston Attorney. Mrs. Dixon died Tuesday night at her home.
A native of Alabama, Mrs Dixon lived to see the United States grow from 28 states to the present 48. At the the time of her birth Texas had just been admitted to the Union, Andrew Jackson had been dead but a year and James K. Polk was president. Mrs. Dixon and her husband, Marion Dixon, came to Texas at close of the Civil War, settling in Bastrop county.
The couple moved to Walker County in 1891 where Mr. Dixon died in 1892. Mrs. Dixon had resided in Walker County since that time.
She was a first cousin of the late John T. Battle, promeinent Waco attorney and one-time member of the board of trustees of Baylor University. Mrs. Dixon was a member of the Baptist church.
Surviving are Mr. Dixon of Houston, Mrs. Cumire Bova and Mrs Delia Josey both of Houston. Mrs. Augusta Wilson of Bishop, Mrs Annie Powers of San Antonio, Luther Dixon of Smithville and Wesley Dixon and Alfred Dixon both of Dodge.
