Army Cpl. Rivadeneira assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th U.S. Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Jonathan enlisted in the Army at 18 soon after graduating from St. Joan of Arc School in Jackson Heights because he felt the military would provide him a pathway to a college education and a career in medicine. He was trained as a medic and was just two months short of the end of his tour when he was killed. The irony is Jonathan risked his life on frontline duty when he didn't have to. As a medic, he could have stayed in the rear, but wanted to be where he was needed most – he volunteered to be with his men. Jonathan was a very happy and well-liked person – a good friend and a good husband to his wife, Heather. He told his family that life was nothing but a gift and not to take anything or anyone for granted.
