Alice Koessel, age 91, of West Des Moines, IA, formerly of Lake View, IA, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at the EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines, IA.

Alice Matilda Koessel was born on December 28, 1928, to parents Arthur and Mabel (Anderson) Carlson in Gowrie, IA. She grew up in Gowrie where she attended grade school and then graduated from Gowrie High School. After graduation, Alice continued her education at Iowa State University.

On February 18, 1951, Alice was united in marriage to Wilmer Koessel at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie. This union was blessed with four children: Allen, Meri, Mike and David. They made their home in Lake View, where Alice was self-employed at Koessel Oil Co. Alice and Wilmer ran their company for 27 years before retiring in 1983.

Alice was very active in her church and a long-time member of the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to many bridge clubs and enjoyed playing many card games in her spare time. She loved baking pies and cookies, and always gave a wonderful homemade coffee cake to friends at Christmas time. Alice traveled to Arizona for 35 years during the winter months where she very much enjoyed the warm weather. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Allen (Judy), Meri (Dean), and Mike (Becky); daughter-in-law, Rajean (Nelson); grandchildren: Christy, Jason, Scott, Joshua, Karissa and Kristofer; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Koessel; son, David Koessel; parents; siblings, Richard Carlson, Harold Carlson, Mary Orness and Wilma Arndt.
