Paul Conley, a third-generation Phoenician, passed away suddenly
and peacefully with family and loved ones at his side at the age of 68. Paul was born August 6, 1939, one of ten children of the late Vincent de Paul and Edna Conley. He was a respected husband, father, brother, friend and advisor. Diagnosed with terminal cancer in February 2003, he chose to forego aggressive treatment to focus on quality of life. This was clearly the right choice because he enjoyed the following three and a half years feeling healthy. As Paul would say, "If I didn't know I had cancer, I would never know I was sick." These years were spent with his childhood sweetheart Willena, his wife of 20 years. They shared a special love that we all admired. Paul was a selfless man who always put the needs of his loved ones ahead of his own. For his family and so many others, Paul was the first person you thought to call when you needed help, advice or a good lecture. We all learned from his ability to face adversity with such courage and grace. We are going to miss his smile, his stories, and his big personality. His children will miss his sage advice and his calls; " This is your Dad. I just called to say I love you." In addition to his wife Willena, Paul leaves behind five children: Kimberly, Michelle Zerbib (Michael), Aubie (Erin), Jay (Sherri and Timothy; three step-children: Robin Sierzchula (David), Lisa Hill (Corbett) and Brady Garrison; six grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, and a large extended family. He was devoted to his family and friends, who were the center of his life. Visitation will be held at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Monday, September 17 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2312 E. Campbell, Tuesday, September 18th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Paul's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave, suite 1000, Chicago, Illinois, 60611.
