Funeral services for Roger N. Platt, 51, Rantoul, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Olathe.

Mr. Platt died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

He was born July 27, 1956, in Gardner, the son of Walter "Bob" and Annabelle Bowers Platt. He grew up in the Spring Hill area. He moved to Ottawa in 1965 and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1974.

Mr. Platt worked as a skilled heavy equipment operator and received his training from North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit. He worked on the Galveston Causeway Bridge in Galveston, Texas, and South Padre Island Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas. He also worked for local area construction companies and on area projects including the Hillsdale Dam and Garnett Lake.

He attended First Baptist Church in Ottawa. He enjoyed caring for animals, including many strays and his dogs, Lucky, Blackie and Diggy. He also enjoyed fishing, tending his vegetable garden, viewing sporting events and watching the Sci-Fi Channel.

Survivors include his stepfather, Robert "Bob" V. Pence, Ottawa; a brother, Randy Platt and companion Phyllis Hoffman, Lenexa; a sister, Carla James and husband Larry, Topeka; two stepbrothers, Bruce Pence, Garnett, and Steve Pence, Houston; a stepsister, Cynthia McLean and husband Fred, Wichita; a niece, Angie Anderson; and three nephews, Tony and Adam Pence and Randall James.

Mr. Platt was preceded in death by his parents.
