Alva Carlson, 89, Minneapolis, MN and formerly of Fairdale, ND died Monday, January 19, 1998, in Ebenezer Lutheran Field Hall, Minneapolis, MN.

Alva Marian Thorson was born April 11, 1908, the daughter of Edward and Gudbjor (Holth) Thorson, in Edinburg, ND. She attended school in Grand Forks, ND. She graduated from Mayville State Teachers College in Mayville, ND and taught in rural schools. She graduated from Lutheran Bible Institute, Minneapolis, MN in 1936. She married Lester Carlson on June 26, 1938, in Edinburg. They worked for Augustana Synod Home Missions, Makinen, MN and were part of the pioneer team of missionaries for the World Mission Prayer League in the Andes Mountains, Bolivia, South America. She was a homemaker for several parishes in Fairdale and Rolla, ND, McAllen, TX, Mason City, IA and Forest City, IA, and Viscount, Sask., retiring in 1976. They lived near Becker, MN and Minneapolis. Lester Carlson died Dec. 3, 1994.

She is survived by daughters: Grace (Gordon) Magney, Peshawar, Pakistan and Ruth (Hugh) Bradby, Hoylake, England; a son, Leighton (Carla) Carlson, Des Moines, IA; three grandchildren; brothers, Alton Thorson, Edinburg, ND and Edroy Thorson, Edina, MN; and a sister, Carol Schwartz, Richfield, MN.

She was preceded in death by sisters Wilma Thorson and Clarice Erickson.

Funeral services: Thursday, January 29, 1998, at Odalen Lutheran Church, rural Edinburg, ND. Burial: Odalen Lutheran Cemetery.
