Lydia grew up in Lower Hutt and worked as a teacher until she was 30. She left her position as head of Thorndon’s infant school in order to marry William Williams, a Railways storekeeper and well-known NZ photographer, William Williams (1859-1949). William worked on the railways in Dunedin, Christchurch, Napier, and Wellington. They lived in Dunedin for many years and raised two sons there. A selection of his photographs featuring Lydia was shown at the National Library in 1993 in an exhibition marking the centennial of the petition.
He died 6 May 1949 aged 90 (burial to be found). The National Library has thousands of his photos, donated by son Edgar

- On April 6 1938, at the residence of the Misses McPhee, Owaka, Lydia Myrtle, the beloved wife of William Williams, of 47 Collins street, Christchurch; in her 82nd year. (Cremated at Dunedin)
