L.C. Booker, 90, Dies at Luttrell
Lon Columbus (Uncle Lon) Booker, 90, native of Union County, died at 7:30 last night at the home of his son, William Vasco Booker, Luttrell. He had been ill for about four days.
Mr. Booker worked for the People's Telephone Company which was later absorbed by Southern Bell, and installed the first telephone in Ayres Hall at UT.
Laid off during the Depression, he farmed on Flat Creek near Luttrell. He retired from farming about four years ago after his horse, Mike, died about the age of 30. His father Pryor Booker, was a Union soldier. Mr. Booker refused to apply for Social Security until he was 83. He would not put any of his land into the Soil Bank.
Besides his son -- a retired TVA lineman -- Mr. Booker leaves three grandchildren W. L. Booker, Knoxville, a foreman with Dempster Brothers; Mrs. H. T. (Marie) DeVault, Blaine, and Mrs. Jim (Peggy) Dykes, Rockford.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Ailor's Funeral Home, Maynardville. Burial will be in Sharp's Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight.
