Susan Kempton Travis, age 72 of Thurman, IA, died Monday, September 7, 2020 at Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, IA following a brief illness. Susan was born February 15, 1948 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Bertha Emaline (Mendenhall) Kempton and Alva Curtis Kempton.

She spent her childhood in Tabor, Iowa, attended Tabor Elementary School, and later Fremont Mills, and graduated with the class of 1966. She married Glen Eugene Travis in the Sidney Methodist Church in 1966. Three children were born to this union; 2 daughters, Vicki Sue and Kari Jennifer, one son, Scott Glen. She graduated from Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing in Council Bluffs and received a Woman of the Year award at graduation. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Jennie Edmundson in ICU for 26 years. She and Glen were instrumental in starting the Thurman Rescue Department and was also active with the Thurman Fire Department for many years.

Her many hobbies included painting landscapes, etc. She was an avid arrowhead hunter and found many. She was a beautiful seamstress, and made most of her children's clothing when they were small. Most of all she loved flowers and tending to them both in the house and outside in the garden. She enjoyed going to flea markets in Whitecloud and Brownville. Yearly vacations included grandchildren going to Wisconsin, Colorado, Washington State, Idaho and Yellowstone Park. She and Glen vacationed in North Carolina when their children were young. Her dream vacation with Glen was traveling to Ireland, Scotland, and England in 2000. There were many stories to tell about their vacations.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Glen Eugene Travis, of Tabor, Iowa; daughters, Vicki Poe of Shenandoah, Kari Kaufman (husband Jeremy) of Thurman, son Scott Travis of Tabor; 7 grandchildren; Eric and Ryan Poe, Seth Travis, Randy Dexter, Kane, Jade and Hunter Kaufman, two great-grandchildren: Greyson and Rowan; brother Richard Kempston and wife Jo of Lincoln, Nebraska, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, September 11, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Thurman, IA with Rev. Jan Philips officiating. Visitations will be with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA. Interment will be in the Tabor, IA Cemetery and memorials will go to the family. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA is in charge of arrangements.
