"R. A. Clark, 86, Dies Tuesday After Illness

Reed a. Clark, 86, well-known former Algona grocer, died at his home here shortly after midnight Tuesday night. He had been ill with pneumonia since Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday after noon, Feb. 13, at First Baptist church, with the Rev. Roland Andrews officiating. McCullough's are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clark is survived by a brother, William S. Clark, who has made his home here during the past two years; by two sons: Hiram R. Clark, Coos Bay, Ore., Williams S. Clark, St. Cloud, Minn, and two daughters: Mrs. Della B. Reaper, Irvington and Mrs. Thea Sparks, Algona. One son, Roscoe died in infancy. There are 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A niece, Althea Tredennick, raised in the Clark home, met death in an accident three years ago.

Read A. Clark was born at Canandaigua, N., Y., Oct. 6, 1867, and as a small boy moved with his parents to Kansas. He was married in that state on March 29, 1890 to Mary Elizabeth Walker. They lived in Illinois for a time, but came to Kossuth county in 1911 and settled on a farm east of Bancroft.
In 1922 they came to Algona. For 20 years Clarks operated the grocery store opposite the courthouse, known as the Algona market, and Mr. Clark was a familiar figure about town even after his retirement twelve years ago.

He had been very lonely since the death of his wife on Dec. 12, two months ago tomorrow, and will be buried by her side in the Bancroft cemetery. The daughters are here, and the son from St. Cloud will be present but it is not known at this writing whether Hiram can dome from Oregon."
